Film fans could enjoy a treat in the Algarve

The Algarve National Film Festival will be held in May and is the region's oldest cinema event.

Dating back to 1972, the festival centres around a short film competition, which is open to animated and live-action 35mm shots.

In addition to this, there are other prizes awarded including best film by a Portuguese director, best film about the Algarve and, perhaps most interestingly, best film with a message of love and peace among men.

All the entrants are shown in their native language with the use of electronic subtitles.

After enjoying watching the films, holiday makers may want to indulge in a little retail therapy as many of the resorts and towns in Algarve hold lively markets once a week.
