Enjoy the last taste of summer on an Algarve holiday

Those looking to soak up the last of the summer rays should jet off on an Algarve holiday, according to one travel journalist.

In an article for the Telegraph, Fiona Hardcastle said there is nowhere better to enjoy a late glimpse of sunshine than the beaches of Portugal's southern coast.

She explained that the Algarve enjoys more than 3,000 hours of sun a year, with average temperatures in October remaining high at around 22 degrees C.

"Always family-friendly, the Algarve will now also be largely family-free, so if your household is untouched by school terms, there really is no better time to go," she remarked.

Ms Hardcastle recommended spending a morning relaxing in one of the many sandy coves along the Algarve's 100-mile stretch of coast, followed by an afternoon drive through "pretty" hilltop villages such as Loule and Silves.

The Algarve is also brimming with great places to eat, allowing tourists to sample some local specialities and try some Portuguese wine.

Those seduced by the idea of basking in the late summer sun could rent an Algarve villa at the Club Atlantico Leisure Resort, which is situated on a quiet cliff top overlooking the sea.

One of the Algarve's most beautiful beaches - Praia do Carvalho - can be found below the resort, and the villages of Loule and Silves can be reached by car for those who want to follow Ms Hardcastle's advice.
