Enjoy great food in Faro on an Algarve holiday

Those hoping to sample some delicious Portuguese cuisine on their Algarve villa holiday should head to the region's capital Faro.

In an article for the Independent, travel journalist Cathy Packe said the city has some great fish restaurants as well as some lively bars.

She said tourists could start the day with fresh omelettes on the harbour front or at the Cidade Velha cafe, which is tucked against the walls of the cathedral.

For lunch they could head to Taberna Modesto for some barbecued sardines, accompanied by potatoes and salad.

In the evening, the locals eat late, often enjoying a drink or two before their meal, said Ms Packe.

Those who want to start a little earlier should head to a harbourside bar for a well-chilled white port before choosing one of the city's many great restaurants.

"For fish, try the long-established Faro e Benfica overlooking the harbour, where main courses cost around €14 (£12)," she recommended.

If seafood does not appeal, holiday makers could try the Portuguese speciality cataplana, which is both the name of the recipe and the dish in which it is cooked.

Those hoping to spend a day in Faro sampling its culinary delights could rent an Algarve villa in St Barbara de Nexe, which is just 20 minutes away by car.

The village is built on the site of a Bronze Age fort so could appeal to those with a keen interest in the region's history.
