Enjoy endangered marine wildlife on holiday in Algarve
Tourists who take a holiday in the Algarve may not realise they are in one of the world's best locations for taking a closer look at seahorses.
According to the Portugal News, Project Seahorse – a worldwide scheme to save the marine creatures – is targeting the Algarve as a spot in which it can allow the animal to thrive.
It wants to create an artificial habitat within the region's Ria Formosa National Park where seahorses can live.
The colony already in place within the park is one of the densest on the planet, the newspaper notes.
Seahorses are fascinating creatures that can use camouflage to deter predators, grow up to 16 cm and live in underwater prairies.
With so many found in the Algarve, those taking a holiday in the area may wish to use their trip as an opportunity to learn more about them.
Annie Bennett, writing for the Daily Telegraph, this week suggested Seville – located just over the Spanish border from the Algarve – is a great place to visit.
