Discover 'authentic' Portugal in an Algarve villa holiday
Writing in the Irish Times, Charlie Taylor said he was surprised to find that although extremely popular with tourists, the Algarve has maintained much of its Portuguese charm.
During a stay in the region, he said he spent time relaxing by the pool in the resort town of Alvor and taking excursions along the coast and further inland - trips that revealed "just how fabulous southern Portugal is".
"Those looking to uncover the authentic, unspoilt Algarve need merely jump in a car and take to the road to find themselves kilometres away from any hint of a high-rise," he remarked.
Mr Taylor recommended a trip to Lagos, which was the base for many of Henry the Navigator's overseas expeditions.
Today, much of the town is still surrounded by Roman walls, so could make a great day trip for history buffs and those interested in architecture.
Holiday makers can book an Algarve villa in Alvor where Mr Taylor stayed. This quiet coastal resort is in close proximity to Lagos and boasts numerous traditional Portuguese restaurants where tourists can enjoy some fantastic freshly-caught fish.
