Delve into Portugal's culture when staying in Algarve villa
People staying in a villa in the Algarve have been advised there is plenty more to Portugal than simply its southern coastline.
While many will understandably be drawn towards the Algarve's fine beaches and picturesque shore, Jack Fagan, writing for the Irish Times, recommends delving further into the nation.
The region of Alentejo is one place tourist bodies are hoping to attract visitors to, with the area covering a third of Portugal but housing just seven per cent of its population – perhaps emphasising the peace and beauty that can be found.
"Little more than an hour from Lisbon, Alentejo is dominated by superb landscapes, ancient architecture and rolling plains planted with olive groves, cork trees and colourful vineyards," writes Mr Fagan.
It could be the perfect destination for a day trip from an Algarve villa or even somewhere to punctuate a trip to the south of country with a few days away.
People planning a holiday in Portugal may be pleased to know budget airline Jet2.com recently announced it is expanding its base at Newcastle Airport to offer five new routes – including one to the Algarve.
