Brits 'should get currency in advance for Algarve holidays'
Britons planning Algarve villa holidays and other breaks in the eurozone have been urged to acquire their foreign currency in advance and not wait until they get to the airport.
Post Office Travel Money carried out a survey which found that almost 1.2 million people visiting eurozone countries every year are wasting over £28 million by using airport exchange desks.
Travellers will often have to pay commission charges if they wait until the last minute to change up their money and could also receive a less favourable exchange rate.
Sarah Munro, head of Post Office Travel Money, pointed out that planning ahead can provide a significant benefit for people taking Algarve holidays.
"We compared rates at five UK airports with those available in Post Office bureaux de change branches and found that tourists buying at the airport would get far fewer euros for their pounds," she said.
"In fact families changing £286 into euros at the airport face losing over £16 - enough to buy a round of drinks and eight ice creams in Portugal, summer 2010's best value destination."
The pound recently reached a 20-month high against the euro, meaning Britons will get more for their money during Algarve villa breaks this summer.
