Book an Algarve villa and escape the crowds

Those hoping to escape the tourist crowds and enjoy some peaceful relaxation could consider an Algarve holiday.

According to the Lonely Planet website, it is easy to get away from it all in the Portuguese region.

It points out that although the Algarve has become something of a tourist hotspot, it is still possible to find somewhere quiet and traditional.

"Even at the busiest resorts in the Algarve, it only takes a short bus ride or a walk across countryside to reveal rarely visited places that still offer the feeling of discovery - a sentiment close to the Portuguese soul," the online portal states.

From medieval castles to "picture-perfect" villages set in the hills and along the coast, the region has plenty to offer.

Beach lovers will also enjoy the Algarve's sandy coves, with their "dramatic end-of the-world" cliffs.

Those renting Algarve villas in Carvoeiro will be able to spend time on the resort's golden sandy beach, which is sheltered by some stunning rock faces.

Tourists can also take boat trips to some of the quieter and often secluded coves further along the coast.

Further inland, they will find the town of Silves with its ancient castle ruins.
