Holiday makers staying in an Algarve villa will see for themselves why presenter Carol Smillie rates the Portuguese region as her favourite destination.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, Smillie states that she travels to Algarve with her family as often as they can, making good use of their villa holiday home.

Relaxing in the sun and discovering what the region has to offer were some of the holiday highlights, she said.

"We flop on the beach, swim in the pool, and we also drive around the villages outside our resort to see the 'real' Algarve. The people are delightful."

Travel is important to the presenter and her husband Alex Smillie, with both of them taking separate holidays during the year.

She claims to never travel without her sketch book, taking it down to the beach along with her iPhone and Boots disposable eye masks.

Hot weather and famous beaches make an Algarve holiday a popular choice for travellers.

A wide range of leisure facilities ensure there is something for everyone, and those wanting to discover the untouched side of Portugal can head for the hills to find quaint villages and rolling vineyards.
