Be a 'tomb raider' on an Algarve holiday
The mines at Cova dos Mouros Mine Park reportedly date back to 2,500BC and the area was mined until the 19th century, so it is a snapshot of the entire modern history of Portugal.
Deep in the mines Iron Age gravestones have been found, along with Roman tombs and structural remains, according to Whatsonwhen.
"Hundreds of archaeological remains have been discovered, including scoria and clinker remains, casting crucibles, moulds and copper artefacts from the ancient mines," the site adds.
The park is seen as an excellent way to discover Algarve's past, while holiday makers who choose to rent a villa in the petite rural hamlet of Bordeira can discover the real Portugal.
However, the private pool, dishwasher, satellite TV, local bars and restaurants should ensure that a little bit of luxury is also on offer.
