Algarve villas: Worldwide golf tourism on the up

More people look to be taking golf holidays, which could include visiting some of the picturesque courses available around Algarve villas.

Peter Walton, chief executive of the International Association of Golf Tourism Operators, pointed out that international golf tourism is one of the only sectors that has continued to grow since the economic downturn.

In fact, Mr Walton acknowledged that golf trips have been the quickest sector to have recovered from the 2008 recession.

By the end of 2011, international golf tourism is expected to pass 50 million people and could even close in on 55 million before December is out.

"Golf tourism bounces back more quickly than other sectors. In established markets, one in three golfers plan to travel in the next 12 months. That is a lot more than in other sectors, like skiing," Mr Walton explained.

Sport fans who take up a stay in villas in the Algarve have a raft of golf courses to seek out, from eye-catching sites in Quinta do Lago to resorts in San Lorenzo.
