Algarve villa occupants told of archaeology dig discoveries
Brits with a keen interest in the history of the world may want to look into booking villas in the Algarve to seek out the findings of an archaeology dig.
Mario and Rosa Varela Gomes, a pair of archaeologists based at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, have been leading an excavation at the Aljezur location of the Ribat de Arrifana.
Rosa Varela Gomes has acknowledged to Lusa News Agency that the dig has led to the discovery of a mosque, 21 burials and a funerary head stone in situ around the site.
With the help of over 20 archaeology students at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, work will continue until the end of the month to try and find more discoveries.
Following this, Ms Varela Gomes said: "The Polis [programme] will strengthen the structures found and enable the place to be preserved for the public to visit, giving the heritage back to the community, which should happen in 2013."
Only last week, the Lusa News Agency reported that plans are underway so that people staying in Algarve villas can seek out an underwater museum three miles off the coast of Portimao in the future.
