Algarve towns join 'slow city' initiative
The reputation of the Algarve as a great region for a relaxing holiday may be further enhanced by the addition of four of its towns to the Cittaslow movement.
Silves, Tavira, Lagos and Sao Bras de Alportel have become official members of the 'slow city' scheme, which was established in 1999 to promote a better quality of life for residents and visitors.
Now, mayors in the Algarve towns will turn their attention to boosting leisure and heritage initiatives in the region, the Resident reports.
Commenting on the goals of Cittaslow, a spokesperson for the organisation told the newspaper: "We want to involve areas with untouched landscapes and traditional craftsmen and where people are still able to observe the slow course of the seasons."
Those taking villa holidays in Silves will be able to recognise all of these characteristics in the town, which combines centuries of history in its architecture with the lush landscape that extends into the neighbouring hills.
