Algarve 'offers more than just golf and sunshine'

According to journalist Kate Simon, there are numerous sights and attractions waiting to be explored along the Portuguese coast, which couples and families could visit in between rounds of golf on the greens.

"Away from the package-holiday hubs lie rocky coves and dune-backed sands where surfers battle with the Atlantic waves," she wrote in an article for the Independent.

She recommended a trip to one of the Algarve's "fantastic" nature reserves or a visit to some of its traditional fishing villages to enjoy some freshly-caught seafood in a restaurant along the harbour.

The Algarve also has a lot to offer for history buffs, Ms Simon insisted. Indeed, holiday makers could head to the old Moorish capital of Silves, the 13th-century fortress at Sagres or the Roman bridge at Tavira.

Those hoping to fully explore the Algarve and also fit in a few rounds of golf could stay at the Clube Atlantico, which is in a central location along the coast and will therefore be a great base from which to take day trips.

Most of the resort's villas have a spectacular sea view and there are two excellent golf courses on site, as well as a mini-golf area, a children's playground and tennis courts.
