Algarve holidays: Sand sculpture festival now open
People taking Algarve villa holidays this summer might be interested in paying a visit to Pera to see a major sand sculpture exhibition, which opened at the weekend.
The eighth International Sand Sculpture Festival, or Fiesa, began on May 22nd and will continue until October 22nd.
Held in Pera every year since 2003, the event attracts talented sculptors from all over the world, who create unique pieces of art out of 35,000 tonnes of sand.
The theme for this year's festival is 'the living world', meaning there are exhibits including sharks, elephants, apes, fish and human beings for Algarve villa guests and other visitors to see.
Alper Alagoz, founder of the festival, told the Algarve Resident: "It is a great atmosphere here. This is a space where artists can learn from each other and gain inspiration.
"Many of the carvers who first started here eight years ago have now improved massively and this can be seen in the quality of the work on show here."
People taking Algarve villa holidays this summer should head to Pera after 10:00 local time during the festival to see the sand sculptures.
