Algarve holidays: New EU rules to cut mobile charges
Britons planning Algarve holidays and other breaks in EU countries this summer could benefit from new rules covering mobile phone charges.
The European Commission has installed regulations that will cut the cost of making a call in the EU to 32p per minute.
Prices for downloading data will fall from 82p to 65p per megabyte, while receiving a voicemail message while in an EU country will now be free of charge.
The changes were welcomed by UK communications minister Ed Vaizey.
"As people set off on holiday abroad it is great to know that the cost of mobile calls home from Spain, France and other European countries will be cheaper than ever," he said.
"And with a new cap on the monthly price for data roaming, no longer will unsuspecting tourists and business travellers be stung by an extortionate bill when they return home."
People planning to book villas in Albufeira or Monte Santo for an Algarve holiday this year could also benefit from recent fluctuations in the exchange rate, which have brought the pound to its highest level against the euro since November 2008.
