Algarve holiday season officially underway

The Algarve holiday season appears to be fully underway following some busy weekends for the tourism industry earlier this month.

Visitors flooded into seafront towns and gathered on beaches on the first weekend in June to mark the official start of the summer in southern Portugal, the Algarve Resident reported.

A bank holiday on June 3rd provided the perfect excuse for local people to pay a visit to the region, with nightclubs, bars and coastal locations experiencing a substantial increase in guest numbers.

Tourism agencies are reportedly expecting a very strong summer for Algarve holidays this year, with the influx set to continue over the coming weeks and months as international travellers begin to visit the region.

Nuno Aires, president of the Algarve Tourism Board, said the prospects appear "very good".

He added: "From now on, the expectation is that tourism figures are going to gradually increase over the summer."

Brits planning an Algarve villa holiday over the coming months might be interested in paying a visit to Pera as the town hosts the International Sand Sculpture Festival, which will run until October 22nd.
