Algarve villa holidays could prove a more popular option in the future as a result of a new campaign being launched by local authorities in Albufeira.
The council has teamed up with the Albufeira Promotion Agency (APAL) to raise the profile of the destination and encourage more visits from overseas, the Algarve Resident reported.
Mayor Desiderio Silva revealed that the region will soon be announcing a summer programme of events and entertainment for people on Algarve holidays and introducing an "innovative campaign to boost tourism in the low season".
He also urged local business owners to keep restaurants and other establishments open throughout the year to maximise tourism revenue.
Commenting on the new promotional campaign, APAL vice-president Jose Santos said: "The city of Albufeira is increasingly more appealing and we are grateful for this financial boost which will allow us to be more pro-active."
People planning Algarve holidays this year can book villas in Albufeira to visit the area's historic sites, such as the Almoada castle, and the popular beaches of Sao Rafael, Manuel Lourenco and Pescadores.
